Snowflake Bentley

We are enjoying our current reading selection about an unusual artist named Snowflake Bentley!  Above is a link to a short film about him.

Here is the link to the site to make your own snowflakes.

Holiday Help for New Jersey

At Indialantic Elementary thoughts of helping others in need is a tradition of our holiday. This year the plight of the coastal New Jersey residents, victims of the powerful Hurricane Sandy, is on our minds. There are some similiarities in our communites. Most obvious is the fact that we know hurricanes and the damage they do. Through our teacher community we learned of a school in Monmouth, New Jersey which experienced heavy flooding that destroyed books and materials, along with damage to buildings.
Our school is adopting Monmouth Beach School to assist in replacing the damaged supplies and library books that are parts of the teachers' collections and not replaced through school district insurance. Other beach schools are joining the effort to restore classroom materials.
Informtion came out through Mrs. Jones, our Guidance Counselor and our PTO. In our classrroom, room mothers are providing a coin jar for change from the students and anyone who wants to give. Indialantic is always generous, and I know we will join in the effort to help. We have all seen how small donations can grow to accomplish a lot when everyone is involved in some way. Our Room Moms are standing by to work with PTO and help us with our role in the process.

Thankful Children

Please watch to see us tell you what we are thankful for!

Rocket Math Star

Guest Blogger is Meghan ! She is the first student to complete Rocket Math Multiplication which happened this week! She is sporting the coveted X for multiplication and her award.
Congratulations, Meghan!
In her own words:
"I had to fill up the whole page with math facts like 4x5 or 0x9. Some of the levels were hard and some were easy. I suggest that you don't eat much sugar at lunch because we do Rocket Math right after lunch. If you do eat sugar at lunch, your mind will not go your way!"

Wise words from Meghan. A few others are closing in on the end of multiplication and  everyone is working feverishly to finish their goal correctly in one fast minute!
As for Meghan... she begins Level A in Division Facts tomorrow! Well done!

Science

Thank you for sending in flowers for our flower dissection today. We had a blast cutting them apart to identify the different parts we've been learning about. Please take a minute to watch the videos that we made today in Mrs. Donovan's science class. Thank you to Jane, Cali, Jack and Gwen for helping to make them possible. Nice work of editing everyone!

Our Right to Vote

On Tuesday, Election Day, we had fun with a cute book called Duck for President.   We had our own ballots and "voting booth". The students learned about our rights as voting citizens from a Brain Pop lesson. Brain Pop is a website that our PTO provides as a subscription. It is wonderful and simple information for the students in an animated format. Email me if you would like to have the codes for its use. I can share!
I took a quick photo before B. cast her ballot!

We also created our presidential figure and posted our I Voted buttons in our planners. Ask your student for election results in our two classes!
